In 2007, on the eve of the global financial crisis, Russias economy grew by 8.5%. Last year growth was a meagre 1.3%. 3%。Still, the countrys population of 144m, its entry into the World Trade Organisation, its consumers aspiration to a Western lifestyle and its status as the “R” in the BRICs have persuaded multinationals to keep investing in plants in Russia, and foreign investors to keep providing capital to Russian firms. The attitude until recently, says Alexis Rodzianko of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moscow, was that “Russias economy may be slowing, but my own prospects are pretty good.” Now the outlook for businesses there is looking gloomier. With pro-Russian separatists seizing government buildings in eastern Ukraine, amid talk of a full-scale invasion, firms of all kinds fear a tightening of American-led sanctions, a cut-off of foreign lending and investment, and a further fall in consumers confidence. The most immediate concern, especially for Western firms doing business in and with Russia, is the curbs the ed States and the European Union have imposed on dealings with certain individuals. Even the somewhat stronger American sanctions imposed so far are, on paper, “pretty limited”, says Alexander Kliment of Eurasia Group, a risk-analysis firm. But they have created a “scare factor” that is magnifying their effect. For example, shares in Novatek, a gas producer, fell sharply when the restrictions were announced, on fears it might struggle to do deals with foreign partners or raise capital abroad because Gennady Timchenko, a friend of Vladimir Putins named on the American sanctions list, owns 23% of the company and sits on its board. If Igor Sechin, the boss of Rosneft, another energy firm, is sanctioned, the effect may be similar. Foreign firms fret that sanctions could also create openings for competitors. American firms worry that the EUs softer curbs may give its companies more flexibility. The boss of Siemens, a German engineering giant, met Mr Putin in Moscow last month. Americans and Europeans alike worry about losing out to Asian rivals. Moscow business circles are full of rumours of Chinese executives trying to peel off contracts by urging Russian companies not to depend on Western ones, given the possibility of further trading restrictions. Russian firms and politicians, in turn, are casting around Asia and elsewhere for new customers to replace those they fear losing from the West. Russias deputy prime minister, Arkady Dvorkovich, said this week that the government hoped to finalise soon a long-promised deal for Gazprom to sell gas to China. Rosneft is seeking to treble its exports of oil to China. Sukhoi, a state-owned aircraft-maker, has just struck a deal to sell a fleet of small passenger jets to a Chinese airline, hoping this will offset any loss of orders from Western carriers. But its plane, the Superjet, is chock full of key parts from American and European suppliers, and thus its production is vulnerable to any tightening of sanctions. For domestic firms, a bigger worry than the sanctions imposed so far is the risk of losing access to foreign loans, and what that will mean for investment, productivity and growth, says Elena Anankina of Standard amp; Poors, a ratings agency. Western lenders are likely to honour existing loan deals. But they may be reluctant to provide fresh financing. Rusal, an indebted aluminium producer, is among the Russian firms most exposed to this. Some state banks, such as Sberbank and VTB, have indicated they are y to fill the gap left by Western lenders. But Ms Anankina wonders how long they will be able to do so. Indeed, some Russian banks themselves depend on Western loans. With capital flight hitting 60-70 billion in the first quarter of this year alone, investment in domestic production—what the spluttering economy needs most of all—will be even harder to come by. The fallout from Russias annexation of Crimea and further stoking of unrest in eastern Ukraine has put downward pressure on an aly weakening rouble. On its face, a cheaper currency should be a boon to domestic producers. Visiting Moscow this month, Carlos Ghosn, the boss of Renault-Nissan, a global carmaker which is buying control of AvtoVAZ, the maker of Lada cars, argued that the weak currency will be “an advantage for local brands”. But thinking that a “weak rouble is the way forward” is the “wrong paradigm,” argues Yaroslav Lissovolik of Deutsche Bank. Many Russian manufacturers, like Sukhoi, depend on imports for inputs and equipment. And in any case, many are running near full capacity and will be unable to grab market share from foreign rivals without money to invest in increasing output. This confluence of economic bad news will hit a few industries first and hardest: consumer goods, construction, property and banking. Demand for the roughly half of Russian steel that goes to building projects at home will drop. Car sales, dependent on the availability of bank loans, will probably fall. Aly a softening market has led Ford to consider cutting production at its joint venture with Sollers, a Russian firm. Even a continuation of the current stand-off between the Kremlin and the West would be bad enough for business. But things may well get far worse. /201404/290590Mike: Hi, Amanda. South Koreans now spend more time on it than they do on Naver. Naver。KakaoTalks domestic success spurred Naver to go abroad and go mobile. When a tsunami hit Japan in 2011, Navers employees there huddled at the office and, in one-and-a-half months, created Line, a free mobile messaging and call service that is now being promoted as the Facebook of Asia.2011年日本受到海啸袭击之时,Naver的员工们在办公室里齐心协力,前后花了一个半月的时间最终开发出了一款免费移动通信软件,也就是如今被人推为亚洲Facebook的Line。Within 18 months it hit the 100m-user mark, which took Facebook and Twitter around four years; in November 2013 it surpassed 300m downloads, making it a serious rival for WhatsApp, an American messaging service Facebook is paying billion for. If, as Mr Park predicts, Naver owes half of its revenue to Line in five years, it will have become one of Koreas few global players among internet firms. However, Navers shares fell sharply on February 20th, after Facebook announced its takeover of WhatsApp—on the assumption that the social networks backing would make WhatsApp impossible to beat. Navers shares recovered this week on rumours, which it denied, that a big Japanese tech firm, Softbank, was offering to buy a stake in Line. Navers early attempts to get into big foreign markets went badly. Plans aired in for a Naver California and a Naver Korean-American never took off. Another big rival to Line, WeChat, is the most popular messaging app in China and, like KakaoTalk, is backed by Tencent, Asias biggest internet firm. So Naver is concentrating on two smaller countries where Line aly has a foothold, Thailand and Taiwan, and on places where smartphone use is low but set to boom, such as India and Mexico. In the past year it has spent around 250 billion won on marketing its messaging app in these and other countries. But Navers real strength abroad, says Mr Park, is its decade of experience in the portal business, doing everything from games to shopping to online newspapers. Line can do all these too, whereas WhatsApp is, until Facebook gets its hands on it, mainly a messaging service. Facebook still relies heavily on advertising, but Line makes 70% of its money from games and electronic stickers—oversize and elaborate emoticons, with names such as Cony the Rabbit and Brown the Bear, which users can insert into picture messages. Coca-Cola and Barcelona football club have paid Line to design special stickers for them. It is unclear if smartphone users in Europe and America will warm to such cutesy characters, but Naver hopes to draw those wary of Facebooks open network to Line Band, a closed social-networking service. Though Mr Park expects Lines valuation to converge with that of Facebook in the long term, for now it is tiny by comparison—about 9% the size. 9%。Nevertheless, in 2010 Navers founder, Lee Hae-jin, chided employees for slacking and reminded them of their companys master plan: a first decade struggling; a second decade, marching to number one.

that there is. If eristostatin does prove an effective means to treat cancer, it will join a growing stable of medicines derived from reptile toxins. Tirofiban, for instance, is a modified version of another anticoagulant—in this case from the venom of the African saw-scaled viper. It is given to people with angina, and also to those who have had heart attacks. 4。Exenatide is the synthetic form of a hormone called exendin-4 that occurs naturally in the saliva of the Gila monster, a venomous North American lizard. It works as a treatment for type-2 diabetes because it increases insulin production in those whose blood-sugar levels are high. And captopril, a blood-vessel-relaxing agent widely used to treat hypertension, is based on teprotide, from Brazilian arrowhead vipers, which helps the other toxins in the venom circulate quickly, and thus reach their targets rapidly. The year of the snake蛇年There are other venom-based drugs in the pipeline, too. Crotoxin, a protein from the South American rattlesnake, though not yet approved for use, may one day be employed to treat cancers. Crotoxin seems particularly attracted to cancer cells. One portion of the molecule recognises a protein on the cells membrane, and links to it. The other portion damages the membrane, triggering a mechanism called apoptosis which causes the cell to kill itself. Celtic Biotech, based in Dublin, is running a series of tests using this molecule on cancer patients at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris. This year, Celtic plans to try it on people with several different sorts of cancer, since the firms researchers believe it should be effective on all solid tumours. If those trials are successful, though, they then plan to concentrate on lung cancer, the largest market. Perhaps the most astonishing toxin-derived drug of all, however, is hannalgesin, which is made from king-cobra venom. Kini Manjunatha of the National University of Singapore is developing this substance as a pain-relieving agent. He claims it is between 20 and 200 times more effective than morphine. Moreover, unlike morphine, which is usually injected, hannalgesin can be taken by mouth. He is planning to run the first clinical trials at the end of 2013 or in early 2014. Venom, then, is proving to be a trove of useful molecules. At a time when drug companies are struggling to develop new products,让制药公司通过自然选择对原料进行验,研发新药。a novel source of raw materials that have been road-tested by natural selection, and merely need to be subverted from their original purposes rather than created afresh, must be welcome. It is not turning base metals into gold, as Paracelsus and his kind once attempted. But as a transformation of matter, it is surely a far more valuable trick. /201310/261923
