Seeing the seven wonders of the world, going on safari in Africa and swimming with dolphins are among the list of 50 things the average person wants to do before they die。 But sadly researchers have found that most adults will only ever fulfill five of their lifelong ambitions. Many feel they do not have enough time to tick off the experiences, while others admit to not being fit or adventurous enough or being too afraid of getting hurt。 Becoming a millionaire, traveling the world, seeing the Northern Lights, trekking the Great Wall of China and being mortgage free are the top five respectively on the checklist of dreams。 Among the other less surprising entries are writing a novel, learning to speak another language, visiting the Egyptian pyramids and running a marathon。 But ambitions that might fairly be considered less universal also feature, including travelling around New Zealand in a Winnebago motor home, inventing something that changes people lives, riding a Segway scooter and going to Harry Potter World in Florida。 Other boxes to tick range from gambling in Las Vegas, driving down Route 66 in the ed States and visiting Disneyland to meeting the Queen, learning to fly a helicopter and emigrating。 The list was complied following a study commissioned by outdoor clothing company Helly Hansen of 2,000 adults. More than one third of people surveyed complained that they did not have enough time to achieve their ambition。 More than a quarter also did not believe they were fit enough to attempt their ultimate goal and 12 per cent confessed that had no ambitions at all. Nearly half also realised that they have to be more adventurous to achieve their ambitions。 A spokesperson from Helly Hansen told The Daily Express: #39;It is fantastic to see that so many people still have a passion for taking to the outdoors in order to experience new challenges。 #39;But it is a real shame to see that some may not achieve lifelong ambitions because of a lack of faith in their own ability。 /201508/392196

Ayear or so ago, the journalist Nick Cohen, reviewing a book by the English Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm, made the mistake of guessing what Hobsbawm#39;s obituaries would look like. Those who shared Hobsbawm#39;s political commitments would laud his work, Mr Cohen predicted. Those who did not would say ;his loyalty to totalitarianism disfigured his writing;. There would be little agreement between the two camps. Hobsbawm died last week at the age of 95 and Mr Cohen turns out to have been wrong. Whatever the view in recent years, there is today a remarkable consensus about Hobsbawm. Almost no one makes big claims for the communism that he professed, but almost no one dissents, either, from the view that places him among the great historians of his time. No matter how loudly Hobsbawm proclaimed the communist dogma, his cast of mind was independent. It was too independent for the Soviet Union, which translated none of his sweeping narratives on nationalism, industrialism, imperialism and globalism. Whether or not Hobsbawm is considered a radical communist, he was an impenitent communist. He clung to his party card through the invasions of Czechoslovakia and Hungary, and past the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was sometimes biased. He blamed the liberal democracies for Stalin#39;s decision to ally himself with Hitler. That Hobsbawm ;whitewashed; the crimes of communism is largely a canard. In The Age of Extremes, he suggested that the deaths due to Stalinist terror are more likely ;measured in eight rather than seven digits. In these circumstances it does not much matter whether we opt for a ‘conservative#39; estimate nearer to 10 than to 20 millions or a larger figure: none can be anything but shameful and beyond palliation, let alone justification;. Short of abandoning history for autobiography, he could hardly go further. ;People can differ on whether Hobsbawm#39;s Marxism should matter to his reputation. He thought it should. ;Without Marx I would not have developed any special interest in history,; Hobsbawm wrote in 1997. He refused to apologise for his politics or to couch them in any kind of soft-minded evasion about ;good intentions;. That he defended a cruel and misguided project did not mean he was misguided about everything. Hobsbawm#39;s assertion in Nations and Nationalism (1990) that traditional nationalism was losing its hold on the loyalty of citizens was much ridiculed when the war in Yugoslavia began months later. But today he looks more right than wrong. His scepticism about democracy was not to most official tastes, but only by ignoring the data could one dispute his contention that both Colombia and the US were countries with well-functioning democracies and high murder rates. ;Even as an alternative to other systems,; he wrote of democracy, ;it can be defended only with a sigh.; That elegant, 19th-century-style sentence gives us a clue to why Hobsbawm is beloved even of those who do not share his politics. That a historian subscribes to a political ideology does not make him a politician, any more than a historian who professes a religion is necessarily a priest. If there is a mystery here it is why so many artists and writers should have been drawn to the materialistic, mechanistic doctrines of Marxism rather than to more individualistic creeds. How did Victor Jara or Gabriel García Márquez wind up thinking it worthwhile to fight for collectivism? Hobsbawm himself was interested in such questions. He wondered, for instance, about his own enthusiasm for detective stories, for instance, which he considered a ;deeply conservative genre;. More than most historians, Hobsbawm cared about culture. He wrote excellent jazz criticism, never stopped ing novels and made occasional observations in print about high fashion. Hobsbawm had a clear idea of where his appeal lay. ;I try out my books first as student lecture courses,; he wrote in 2003, ;because lecturing is a good way of testing whether a historian holds his audience.;正如信仰宗教的史学家未必就是一名神职人员,认同某种政治意识形态的史学家也不一定会成为政客。 ;History is a branch of literature, not of science, although, like all literature, it draws much of its strength from the ;scientific; ability to perceive patterns, discard falsehoods and draw conclusions. The Marxist historian may believe devoutly in what Marx said of philosophy: ;The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.; But in practice history is often more like poetry as W.H. Auden describes it, a discipline that ;makes nothing happen;. Both world views characterise Hobsbawm, who wrote in the preface to his 1997 essay collection On History that facts provide ;the point from which historians must start, however far from it they may end;. /201210/203211Of course, we#39;d all love to have a major beauty stash, but sometimes we just don#39;t have all of those cool tools at our disposal. Though marriage is practiced in almost all countries of the world, the customs are quite different from one culture to another. It is interesting for me to compare the customs of marriage in the ed States with those in my country. I#39;ve lived in the U.S. for four years now, but I#39;m still not comfortable with the customs here. In fact, what seems strange to me is that courting or dating is not always for the purpose of finding a husband or wife. Some people seem to do it as a hobby. Here in the ed States, I have noticed that courting is begun by the young couple themselves, and they seem to have a lot of freedom to decide and do what they want. Both young men and women date a number of different people. They do it without the knowledge or help or their parents. In fact, I have known several friends who got married without even telling their parents or other family members. At the actual wedding ceremony, the father of the bride symbolically gives his daughter to the groom. It#39;s only a custom, I think, because the bride and groom aly know each other quit well. The bride and groom stand together in front of the religious leader or government official to be married. The official s from a short prepared speech and then asks both the man and woman if they are willing to be married to the other. If they both say ;yes,; and nobody attending the wedding stands up to object, they are declared ;man and wife.; It is interesting that the two families are asked if there are any objections right during the ceremony. Perhaps it is because the family members are not as involved in the wedding preparations as they are in Iran. Marriage is different in a number of ways in my country. In Iran, courting is more serious, and is performed strictly for the purpose of marriage. It is definitely not a part of the fun-filled years of growing up like it is here in America. It is the mother of the young man who initiates the process by visiting the home of a potential bride. She goes to inspect the girl, and discover the position and wealth of the girl#39;s family. If she is pleased, then she will return another day with her son. If her son is also pleased, then the two families get together to talk about the dowry, the wedding ceremony, who they will hire to perform the marriage and other matters. The actual marriage ceremony is quite different, however, from the American wedding ceremonies I have seen. The bride, dressed in white, with a veil over her face, sits in a room alone. She sits on a special piece of silk which is surrounded on two sides by very long pieces of flat b. Two mullahs stand outside the door to this room ing from the Koran. Twice the bride must remain silent to the questions of the mullahs. The groom#39;s mother then presents a gift of gold to show that her side of the family is serious. The bride then responds to the mullahs in much the same manner as do Americans when they say ;I do.; The groom is allowed to go into the bride#39;s room while the mullahs take care of the official marriage papers. One more difference between the marriage customs of the ed States and my country is that the bride does not immediately go to the home of her new husband. For several months, she continues to stay at her own home preparing her dowry and receiving instructions from her mother on how to be a good wife and mother. After a few moths, the groom and his relatives come for the bride and take her to his home along with the dowry. Though I can certainly see the advantages of the freedom that freedom that is given to American youths to choose whom they will marry and when, I think I still prefer the customs of my home country. I suppose that#39;s be cause there is not so much guessing and uncertainty. /201112/163656。

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20)白羊:In previous lifetimes, you always did the proper thing. You ate, dressed, worked, and lived just the way everyone else did. Conforming made you feel comfortable and accepted, yet at times you went too far, going against your principles because others believed differently. Now you#39;re meant to stand up and be counted. Your point of view, your chosen way of life, is just as valid as anyone else#39;s. TAURUS (April. 21-May 21)金牛:You love nice things, but often you deprive yourself of them, even when you can afford it. After all, do you really need to buy that bestseller when you can get it at the library? In several lifetimes, you were, frankly, a miser. You lived like a pauper when you had plenty of money. Now, you need to accept that it#39;s all right to enjoy nice things. They are part of the gifts of the Earth. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)双子:The simple things in life fascinate you: clouds, flowers, ripples on the creek. You could walk or sit for hours, observing whatever you encounter. Throughout many incarnations, you were a scholar, caught up in higher knowledge: law, philosophy, theology, science. You rarely took the time to notice the simple things — and the profound truths they represent. In this life, you#39;re meant to notice them. Keep it up! You love your home, and there isn#39;t a place on Earth you#39;d rather be. Your family is top priority and, as a result, you#39;re very deeply loved. But you weren#39;t always this way. There were lifetimes in which you cared about nothing but business. Whether you were a king, a merchant, or a simple farmer, you probably knew your associates better than you knew your family. This lifetime should balance the scales. Are you often teased because of your big ego? It#39;s OK! You#39;re meant to acknowledge your own magnificence now, because previous personalities were too busy taking care of the poor and downtrodden. You treated each and every one as if they were part of your own family. Now it#39;s your turn. The secret is to be quietly aware of your strength without coming off as a braggart. Priest, priestess, monk, nun, healer — you#39;ve been them all, dedicated to the spiritual life, retiring from the world, though willing to help others in their time of need. In this life, you may have found yourself cast into the world of mundane commerce. You#39;re responsible for administration, management, personnel, and such. You may still long for the cloister, but learn this lesson first. LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23)天秤:Society — and its expectations of you — tends to be very important to you. Your manners are impeccable, you feel most comfortable when you behave in a way that others consider acceptable. In past lives, you didn#39;t.Previous personalities may have been egotistical, arrogant, and somewhat selfish. Therefore, it#39;s your job in this life to behave yourself and to be very nice to everyone. Do your friends think of you as secretive? Chances are, this is true. You never reveal anything about yourself or anything if there#39;s any way you can avoid it. In long-ago lifetimes, however, you may not have been that way. You probably had very few secrets, sometimes bordering on giving too much information. The lesson to be learned here is to find a balance between the two. You enjoy a good time, but often your idea of fun is different from that of your friends. There are times when you#39;ll pass on a good party to attend a lecture on a highly intellectual subject that would bore most people. You probably came to terms with frivolity in lifetimes in which you learned most of what you knew from observing life. You do that still, but you prefer intellectual puzzles. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20)羯:In spite of the fact that you#39;re a very career-oriented person, there are times when you long to spend all your time at home. This results from previous lives in which your home was your entire world. In this life, you#39;re meant to be successful in the world outside your home — and probably, you are. But don#39;t forget to channel energy into your home as well. Remember, the keyword is balance. Do your eyes well up with tears when you hear about victims of war or famine, people whom you#39;ll never know, but still feel a connection with? In prior incarnations, you never even thought about these people. Your family and friends were all that you cared about. Now, in this incarnation, you#39;re meant to look beyond your immediate circle and realize that we#39;re all one family. Think about it! As a native of the twelfth sign of the Zodiac, your previous lifetimes have covered almost all the lessons outlined above. The main one for you, however, is embracing spiritual practices and expressing your feelings about life through art. In past lives, you were very practical and down to earth, perhaps too much so. In the present lifetime, you#39;re meant to look above and beyond it all. /201208/193409

Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows how difficult the whole journey can be. It should be as simple as burning more calories than you consume, but it rarely feels that is all there is to the process. Although calorie intake and expenditure are the basic elements of weight loss, there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration too. In this article, we will look at some of the less considered factors affecting weight loss or weight gain. These factors greatly contribute to a person#39;s success with losing weight; however, only very few people actually pay attention to them. If you have been dieting and exercising but seem to be stuck with unsatisfying results, taking these factors into consideration may be just what you need. Water And Weight Loss水与减肥Water is a natural appetite suppressant. If you constantly fill your stomach with water, you are less likely to feel hungry all of the time as the human brain is not wired to differentiate between hunger and thirst. Aside from suppressing your appetite and stimulating your satiety, water also helps boost your metabolic rate. While each person#39;s hydration needs are different, experts generally suggest 64 ounces or 8 glasses of water a day. Although you are free to space out your intake of water all throughout the day, new studies have found that drinking 2 glasses of water before a meal is best for weight loss. Also as the body struggles to separate hunger from thirst you might just be thirsty and water to the route to feeling sated while not adding to your calorie count. Sleep And Weight Loss睡眠与减肥You may think that sleep and weight loss are so far-off, but there is substantial scientific evidence suggesting a strong association between the two. One study reports that people who sleep 5 hours or less per night generally weigh more than those who get a 7-hour sleep. Other research has shown that inadequate sleep compromises efforts to lose weight through dieting. The link between sleep and weight loss is attributed mainly to hormones. The production of the hormones leptin and ghrelin which work to control feelings of hunger and fullness is said to be influenced by how much or how little sleep a person has. When you do not get enough sleep, your leptin (satiety hormone) levels tend to be low, and your ghrelin (appetite hormone) levels high. This means that you are likely to overeat as your appetite is stimulated and satiety is suppressed. So if you want to keep your natural weight loss mechanisms in place, make sure to get around eight hours of sleep every night. Friends And Weight Loss朋友与减肥As they say, everything that is happening in your life is in one way or another influenced by the people around you and this includes weight loss. Your friends have a lot to do with the outcome of your weight loss efforts. If you are surrounded with people who have no desire to lose weight, it is very likely that you will end up veering away from your weight loss goals. If the people you hang out with eat a lot of unhealthy foods all the time, it would be very hard for you to integrate the lifestyle changes that you need to get to your ideal weight. So, if you are serious about shedding off those excess pounds, find yourself a set of friends that will help you achieve your goals. Find friends who have the same desire for weight loss or a healthy and active lifestyle this way you can still enjoy great company without compromising your want to lose weight. /201207/192497
