Are we alone? And it ties into all the big questions: how do we get here? where are we going? Are we a part of a bigger picture? But for the longest time ,the question was taboo to science. Before the Mid-1990s ,it was considered somewhat embarassing to even address the question, because looking for alien life seems a little frighteningly close to science fiction. For decades ,the farthest we got in looking for aliens was imagining them on the silver screen.(What is your name?) After all, alien life needs a hull, and we havnt even find a planet outside our own solar system. Scientists in fact never talked about planets around other stars. There is no way to detect them. And so it was one of those domains of science that you couldnt answer and therefore you didnt talk about it. Then in 1995, a stronomer discovered a planet orbiting a star 50 light-years from earth. And since then they found hundreds more. For the first time, in human history ,we realized that our sun with its 8 major planets that go around,it is just one type of a planetary system ,one example of billlions. These discoveries are exciting ,but dont expect to dial up ET on these planets anytime soon. Well ,its been a spectacular ride in the last decade to find these planets, most of them are giant planets. Most of the worlds we found are gas giants which probably couldnt support life. You cant stand on pneumas ,no hard surface, they are large balls of hydrogen and helium gas like Jupiter and Saturn. We have found a few rocky planets with hard surfaces ,but they are many times more massive than earth, and contain the most hostile environments you could ever imagine. One such planet, CoRoT-7b,orbits so close to its star that surface temperatures reach as high as 3000 degrees.Sunlights here does not bring the sound of birds song, instead its an Armageddon of volcanic explosions.

A woeful approach to language education continues苟延残喘的语言教育THE last time she was recruiting for her export-sales team, Sarah Grain hired a Lithuanian who speaks Russian, Polish and German. Her two previous hires for Eriez Magnetics, which makes industrial equipment in South Wales, were an Italian who also speaks French, and a Venezuelan who speaks Spanish and Portuguese. All of them speak fluent English. “There were no British applicants who had the requisite language skills,” she says. Ms Grains conclusion is not unusual for a British company. In 2012 a European Commission survey tested the foreign-language proficiency of 54,000 students aged 14 and 15, in 14 nations. Sweden came top, with 82% of pupils reaching an “independent” or “advanced independent” standard. The average for all 14 states was 42%. England came bottom, with just 9%.Grain女士对一家英国公司的此般结论已经让人见怪不怪了。 9%。Part of the explanation is that many peoples second language is English, while many Britons continue to believe that, as native speakers of the lingua mundi, they do not need to bother with foreign languages. They may be right—in terms of communication. But it means that, not only are they missing out on much cultural interaction, they may also be harming their own job prospects. They have not been helped by the educational policies of successive governments. In 2004 Tony Blairs Labour government abolished the requirement to learn a language after the age of 14, causing the numbers taking a language GCSE exam at 16 to fall by half in state schools over the next seven years. Concerned about this rapid decline, the coalition government brought in a new performance indicator called the English Baccalaureate, or EBacc, in 2011. A modern language was one of its five core disciplines. Language teachers—an embattled breed—rejoiced. The number of students entering a GCSE language exam in 2013, the first year the changes took effect, rose by 20% (see chart). 20%。Now, however, those gains could be lost, as the government has seemingly loosened the requirement. From 2016, under a new initiative called Progress 8, it has extended the number of core subjects to eight, appearing to make learning a language voluntary. This has pleased some teachers, who felt the EBacc was too narrow, but linguists are aghast. The decline of languages at GCSE has inevitably had an effect higher up the academic food chain. Though the number of those studying languages to A Level—the exams taken at 18—will increase thanks to the GCSE cohort of 2013-14, it is likely to fall back again. French and German are half as popular as they were 20 years ago. The number of universities offering language degrees has fallen, too: by 50% for German and 40% for French since 1998. The number offering Spanish has also fallen. Degrees in other languages, such as Chinese and Arabic, are becoming more popular, but they are still rare.GCSE中语言的减少,不可避免的会对提高学术竞争有所影响。 The economy and the labour market bear the consequences. In 2012 the British Chambers of Commerce found, in a survey of 8,000 British companies, that 96% had no foreign-language speakers. First-time exporters cited language as a barrier to entering international markets. Though Britain makes up 12% of the population of the EU, less than 5% of EU civil servants in Brussels are British. Not enough Britons can fulfil the language requirement of being able to work in French or German. And even if monoglot Brits can get jobs at multinationals, claims Richard Hardie, non-executive chairman of the British arm of UBS, a bank, “the chances of getting to the top if you only have English are much lower than before”. This lack of language skills also lowers growth. By exactly how much is hard to say, but one estimate, by James Foreman-Peck of Cardiff University, puts the “gross language effect” (the income foregone because language barriers alter and reduce international trade) in 2012 as high as £59 billion ( billion), or 3.5% of GDP. In the linguistic gloom, there are a few bright spots. Some British universities are moving away from literature-based degrees towards joint degrees linked to practical subjects such as law or business studies. Some scientists are learning languages outside their course requirements to make themselves more employable. Meanwhile, in September 2014 the government mandated that all primary schools must teach a language. Getting children started at a young age is admirable. But, with so few language graduates coming out of universities, who is going to teach them ?

Walking through an empty parking structure or some public place that isnt crowded or well-lit can inspire the imagination and bring on a case of the creeps. It can make people feel the place is unsafe, even when theres no evidence.University of Michigan marketing professor Aradhna Krishna wanted to figure out if the right mix of sounds can make us feel safe.Krishna is the director of the Sensory Marketing Lab at the Ross School of Business, and says theyve been conducting a study on the effects that sound has on our perception of safety. In a field study at a parking garage, Krishna says they played different types of sounds that they suspected might alter the way the space is perceived.;Our hypothesis going in was that certain kinds of vocal sounds … would create a feeling of safety,; she says.Krishna says they chose bird sounds because of the similarity they share to human vocal sounds both, ;in their melody and in their language.;She explains they were thinking that bird sounds within the stairwells of the parking structure might create a sense of social presence which would in turn create a perception of safety. As controls, Krishna says they tested using conditions of silence and of music that was similar to the bird sounds in tone and tempo.;Indeed, the bird sounds created a higher sense of safety,; she tells us.The experiment was recreated using conditions of human vocal sounds, classical music and silence. According to Krishna, while the human sounds did score a little higher than the bird sounds, both performed much better than either music or silence in terms of creating a sense of safety.Krishna says they conducted other experiments for which they created s shot from a first person perspective of a person walking through a parking garage or through a subway station. They showed these s to people, and by changing the background music, Krishna says they were able to observe a notable difference both in perception of safety and willingness to purchase a subway pass.So background sound and music can indeed change the way we perceive the space around us, according to Krishna, at least as far as safety goes. She says the takeaway is twofold.;Firstly, we would advocate using vocal music in places which were indeed safe aly, and you wanted to make people realize that these were safe,; Krishna says.;But on the other hand we do not want people to use vocal sounds in areas that are indeed unsafe to create this false perception of safety. So you have to use these results in a very careful way.;-Ryan Grimes, Stateside201508/392713Its a strange, almost alien world. And if the place is strange, many creatures living here are even stranger. These oasis are created not by plants, but by animals, the corals, but not the normal reef building ones. Unlike their hard coral cousins, they dont have chocky skeleton, and they thrive at the depth where light is less intense, capturing food from water current with 8 ferthery tentacles. These soft coral gardens are important, because baby fish hide amongst them.Nearly half of all adult fish on the reef--Proper,grow up in the nursery of lagoon. 201501/355094But sweet Carlos at Empire Center Mattress Store,Was it the matress store? Who goes online, and where谁在网上,在哪里?THE internet looks like an admans dream. Counting how many times an advert on a bus shelter has been viewed is impossible; counting clicks on a blinking banner ad is a doddle. But knowing where each click came from, and how many people are clicking, is harder than it appears. Firms dedicated to click-counting put code on websites that reports the times, origins and frequencies of visits, or get consumers to install it buried in browser plug-ins or mobile apps. These record web-users digital calling-cards: the internet-protocol (IP) addresses of the devices they are using. But to assume that each IP address represents a single user in its country of registration is a wild oversimplification. A new report published on November 4th takes a different approach. Global Web Index (GWI), a market-research firm with local partners in 32 countries, surveys 170,000 consumers a year and recently began to ask detailed questions about internet use. It puts China and India in the top three for Facebook users. Similar Web, which does IP-based analysis, does not even put China in the top ten (see maps).11月4日发表的一份新的报告则采用了不同的方法,全球网络指数机构(GWI)是一家市场调研公司,在32个国家拥有当地合作伙伴,他们一年调查了17万名消费者,并且最近开始探究互联网使用的细节问题。 One reason for the difference is that in many developing markets devices are widely shared (for tablets that is true pretty much everywhere). Conversely, more than three-quarters of respondents in the GWI report said they used more than one device. Another factor is the sp of virtual private networks (VPNs) and proxy servers, which make it possible to surf the web through a foreign server. Once restricted to the tech-literate, these are now common and easy to use. Chinese citizens who want to vault the Great Firewall to use Facebook (banned in China) can do so with a couple of clicks. Foreign fans of the B can use the same trick to watch its programmes via iPlayer, supposedly barred outside Britain. Since VPNs and proxy servers are clustered in countries with favourable rules, such as Sweden and the Netherlands, any count of visits to such sites will be skewed. GWIs picture, it should be said, is far from complete. It misses out Africa entirely, except for South Africa. Self-reported data also have their pitfalls: LIRNEasia, an Asia-Pacific IT think-tank, recently found that many Indonesians who reported using Facebook said they were not internet users—perhaps because they were not sure that one implies the other. And much of the world is going mobile-only, particularly in developing markets; preliminary GWI data suggest that a quarter of web visitors in Indonesia and Vietnam use only a mobile (from which VPN access is, these days, just as easy). Yet both surveys and click-counting software were conceived and optimised for desktop users. Uptake of mobiles is faster than the effort to capture demographic data from them. More broadly, knowing who is online, and where, would benefit government policymakers as well as advertisers. Other figures on technology use are available from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency. But there are gaps here, too. It collates surveys from national census bureaus around the world, but cannot insist that they all pose the same questions. Better figures would be useful, says Susan Teltscher of the ITU. They would help the agency fulfil its mission to ensure web content is available in the languages of its users. In nations where internet use is low, says Kojo Boakye of the World Wide Web Foundation, radio is regarded as the medium with the widest reach. Revised figures for web use would shift how public-service messages are distributed. And as internet use sps, regulators will have to oversee competition between service providers, fight e-crime and plan investment in web infrastructure. But such efforts rely on the numbers that now seem so muddy, points out Geoff Huston, a researcher at APNIC, the internet registry for the Asia-Pacific region.ITU的Susan Teltscher认为需要更有效的数据,这将有助于该机构完成使命,以确保网络内容在用户的语言中可见。 The ITU estimates that 4.3 billion people around the world are yet to get online, 90% of whom are in developing countries. But until data from surveys and clicks can be combined into a single picture, the map of internet usage will be little clearer than the viewership of bus-shelter ads. 翻译:沈竹, 校对:穆毅 译文属译生译世 /201411/342407On Friday, fire officials said that a wildfire has continued to advance near the coast of Santa Barbara, California, ripping through over 1,400 acres and forcing homeowners to flee. About 140 homes and ranches are at risk in the coastal canyons of an area that hasnt seen a fire this big in 60 years. According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Office, mandatory evacuations were called late Thursday for the communities of El Capitan, Refugio, Venadito and Las Flores canyons. The so-called Sherpa Fire, which began Wednesday afternoon and has been driven by 40 mph wind gusts, is being fueled by hot and dry weather. 201606/449883

The explanation that many academics and think-tanks favour is that guards are less tolerant towards women. A 1994 study of Texan prisons found that wardens in female prisons demanded total compliance but those in male prisons did not. Ellie Butt at the Howard League, a prison-reform charity, thinks little has changed. Female inmates, she says, are considered doubly deviant—“a woman, and a criminal?” says one female ex-con, “Youre practically Myra Hindley!” Guards may be more likely to write up and punish womens verbal assaults on staff than mens. Government figures hint this is true. “Disobedience or disrespect” was the reason for 44% of punishments given to female prisoners in 2014 compared with 39% of those handed out to men. Farah Damji, who has spent time in prison, says male guards were particularly keen to put her in her place. “It was a sense of, you think you have some status in the outside world? Ill show you,” she says. Ms Butt reckons such treatment contributes to the disproportionate levels of self-harm committed by women—26% of the prison-system total in 2014. Punishments were designed for men, says Juliet Lyon at the Prison Reform Trust, a charity, and are often a bad fit for women. There are some promising signs of change. Since 2006 the rates of female assaults on staff have more than halved whereas male assault rates have stayed roughly flat. The gap between male and female punishment rates has also narrowed. One reason, Ms Lyon says, is that staff are learning more about working with prisoners who have suffered trauma. A different approach altogether might work better. Women fare worse than men after prison: they are more likely to reoffend after sentences shorter than 12 months, the type they most commonly receive. They do better on alternative measures, though. Around 95% complete community-service sentences, but only 76% of men do. If jail turns women into Walter White, the anti-hero of the television series “Breaking Bad”, there is a case for not putting them there in the first place.
