Man's Youth by Thomas wolfe Man's youth is a wonderful thing it is so full of anguish and of magic and he nevr comes to know it as it is, until it has gone from him ever. It is the thing he cannot bear to lose, it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret, it is the thing whose loss with a sad and secret joy, the thing he would never willingly relive again, could it be restored to him by any magic. Why is this? The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth. And what is the essence of that strange and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignant , so unutterable, with such a bitter pain and joy, when we are young? It is this that being rich, we are so poor; that being mighty, we can yet have nothing; that seeing, breathig, smelling, tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth, feeling with an intolerable certitude that the whole structure of the enchanted life – the most tunate, wealthy, good, and happy life that any man has ever known – is ours – is ours at once, immediately and ever, the moment that we choose to take a step, or stretch a hand, or say a word- we yet know that we can reeally keep, hold, take, and possess ever- nothing. All passes; nothing lasts the moment that we put our hand upon it , it melts away like smoke, is gone ever, and the snake is eating at our heart again; we see then what we are and what our lives must come to.A young man is so strong, so mad, so certain, and so lost. He has everything and he is able to use nothing. He hurls the great shoulder of his strength ever against phantasmalbarriers, he is a wave whose power explodes in lost mid – oceans under timeless skies, here-aches out to grip a fume of painted smoke, he wants all, feels the thirst and power everything, and finally gets nothing. In the end, he is destroyed by his own strength, devoured by his own hunger, impoverished by his own wealth. Thoughtless of money or the accumulation of material possessions, he is none the less defeated in the end by his own greed a greed that makes the avarice of King Midas seem paltry by comparison. And that is the reason why, when youth is gone, every man will look back upon that period of his life with infinite sorrow and regret. It is the bitter sorrow and regret of a man who knows that once he had a great talent and wasted it , of a man who knows that once he had a great treasure and got nothing from it , of a man who knows that he had strength enough everything and never used it. 97。

  • To Fanny Brawne, th October, 1819. College Street My dearest Girl; This moment I have set myself to copy some verses out fair. I cannot proceed with any degree of content. I must write you a line or two and see if that will assist in dismissing you from my Mind ever so short a time. Upon my soul I can think of nothing else—The time is passed when I had power to advise and warn you against the unpromising morning of my life—My love has made me selfish. I cannot exist without you—I am getful of every thing but seeing you again—my life seems to stop there—I see no further. You have absorbed me. I have a sensation at the present moment as though I was dissolving—I should be exquisitely miserable without the hope of soon seeing you. I should be afraid to separate myself far from you. My sweet Fanny, will your heart never change? My love, will it? I have no limit now to my love. Do not threat me even in jest. I have been astonished that Men could die Martyrs religion—I have shuddered at it—I shudder no more—I could be martyred my religion—Love is my religion—I could die that—I could die you. My creed is love and you are its only tenet—You have ravished me away by a Power I cannot resist and yet I could resist till I saw you; and even since I have seen you I have endeavoured often “to reason against the reasons of my love.” I can do that no more—the pain would be too great—My love is selfish—I can not breathe without you. Yours ever John Keats 00。
Three oldhens from the neighbored were standing on the cornergossiping有三个邻居老婆子站在街角上说长道短说到hen还要提到与hen相关的表达:hen-pecked怕老婆的,本义是 “被母鸡啄的”意思是“象软弱的公鸡经常被强壮的母鸡啄伤男子慑于女性的淫威,表现得帖帖”这个表达出自90年德莱顿的喜剧《安菲特律翁和发行的杂志《旁观者理解了上面的意思,那么hen party就不难理解为“女人的聚会”后引申为凡是只有女人参加的社交性聚会都叫hen party与它相对的是stag party雄鹿会,只有男子参加的聚会 、spring chicken少女 原意“童子鸡,不超过个月的肉嫩的笋鸡”这一表达来源已久:在古时候由于孵化技术上的原因,不到春天就很难得到这样的鸡,后转义为“少女”Mrs. Gray may not be a granny, but she's certainly no spring chicken格雷夫人也许还不算老太太,但是她的年纪肯定不小啦有时可直接用chick表示“小女孩儿”That chick's areal tiger. She scratched my face when I talked back那小娘儿们可真是个母老虎当我还嘴时,她竟然抓破了我的脸 3、the little woman老婆,太太 请注意不要漏掉定冠词theI promised the little woman to be home early tonight我答应我老婆今天晚上早回家偶尔也表示“你太太”How's the littlewoman? I'm fine, but the missus has been alittle under the weatherrecently我身体很好,但是我老婆最近有点不舒有时用于对方或第三方的妻子Hello, Jim. How's the missusthese days? I promised to take my better half shopping this afternoon我答应我妻子今天下午带她去买东西 、one's ball and chain老婆 本义是“带有重铁球的脚镣”过去犯人在户外劳动时,为防止他们逃跑而带上这种刑具把丈夫象犯人似地束缚起来,转用于玩笑中指“老婆”Yes, I'm going to the party tonight, but I'll have to drag along myball and chain是呀,我要参加今天的社交晚会,但是我必须带着我家的母老虎lady of the house也指“老婆,屋里头的” 5、one's old lady老娘,某人的母亲 此处的old并不表示“老,年纪大”,与an old lady“老太太”不同Her old lady is very young她老娘很年轻这样的说法很自然但有时可能有人不喜欢,所以使用时要注意场合在谈到自己的母亲时,可以加定冠词,作the oldladyThe old lady has gone to bed俺娘已经睡下了那fat lady指的什么呢? The operais not over until the fat lady sings关键人物出面问题才会解决原来fatlady是在歌剧中演压轴戏的女主角,俗称“大大”说到one's old lady,顺便提及one's old man老爸,老头Hisold man is thirty他老豆30岁了在指“家父”时,加定冠词,作the old manI'll have to ask the old man我得去问问我爸爸 6、doll美人 本义“洋娃娃”在男性使用的场合仅指“美人”,并无头脑简单的意思Get a load of that doll over there. I wonder what her nameis你瞧瞧那边的那位美人哟! Isn't the captain of the baseball team a doll? There are a lot of good-looking skirts among the new freshmen this year在今年新入学的大学一年级学生中,有很多好看的姑娘 8、clinging vine会撒娇的女子;依赖男子的女人 像绕在树上的爬藤一样总挎着男人胳膊的女人Every time we invite Bill to dinner, he showsup with one of his clinging vines我们每次请比尔吃饭的时候,他总是带着一位贴在身上撒娇的女人这一习语多用于未婚的女性在用于已婚女性时,意思是“不能独立,依赖男人生活的女人”Why don't you do something by yourself a change? When Imarried you I didn't realize you were such a clinging vine你为什么不改变一下,依靠自己做点什么事情呢?
Ode on Melancholy NO, no! go not to Lethe, neither twist Wolf's-bane, tight-rooted, its poisonous wine; Nor suffer thy pale ehead to be kist By nightshade, ruby grape of Proserpine; Make not your rosary of yew-berries, Nor let the beetle, nor the death-moth be Your mournful Psyche, nor the downy owl A partner in your sorrow's mysteries; shade to shade will come too drowsily, And drown the wakeful anguish of the soul. But when the melancholy fit shall fall Sudden from heaven like a weeping cloud, That fosters the droop-headed flowers all, And hides the green hill in an April shroud; Then glut thy sorrow on a morning rose, Or on the rainbow of the salt sand-wave, Or on the wealth of globèd peonies; Or if thy mistress some rich anger shows, Emprison her soft hand, and let her rave, And feed deep, deep upon her peerless eyes. She dwells with Beauty—Beauty that must die; And Joy, whose hand is ever at his lips Bidding adieu; and aching Pleasure nigh, Turning to poison while the bee-mouth sips Ay, in the very temple of Delight Veil'd Melancholy has her sovran shrine, Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue Can burst Joy's grape against his palate fine; His soul shall taste the sadness of her might, And be among her cloudy trophies hung.。
