Grabbing cancer by the short and curlies短发卡——钳住癌症的新武器A new technique for analysing tumours promises better understanding and more effective treatment一项研究肿瘤的新技术为人类更加深入地了解肿瘤并找到更加有效的治疗方法带来了希望 Sep 24th 2011 | SAN FRANCISCO | from the print editionONE of the great hopes nurtured by the Human Genome Project was that it would crack cancer open. Knowing which genes were going wrong would, the theory went, allow specifically tailored drugs to be developed. And this is, indeed, happening. Only last month America’s Food and Drug Administration approved a medicine called Xalkori (generically, crizotinib) for patients who have a particular type of non-small-cell lung cancer, the most common form of that disease. Xalkori blocks the growth of tumours caused by a mutant form of the gene which encodes a signalling molecule known as anaplastic lymphoma kinase. This mutation occurs in 3-5% of lung-cancer patients, and in trials Xalkori caused a dramatic shrinkage of the tumour in around half of those treated. The catch is that the respite does not last. Typically, someone will respond for about a year, but after that his tumour starts growing again and the disease continues on its course. This is a pattern seen again and again with the new generation of drugs that genomics has helped to create. They slow the disease, but only for a few months. The presumption is that further mutations are arising in a tumour all the time, and that eventually one of them makes a molecular change that nullifies the effect of the drug. Researchers would dearly like to find a way to deal with this. A Chinese industrial champion opens up a bit on its way to world domination一家中国工业引领者走向全球的道路上,撩开了一点自己的面纱Apr 20th 2011 | HONG KONG | from the print editionANOTHER annual report sent out in the season when countless companies worldwide are publishing them is at risk of being filed in the bin. Not so if the company is Huawei and the report is intended to make a company that reflects the best of China’s manufacturing prowess, while being a prime example of its secretiveness, seem normal. The telecoms-equipment maker’s financial performance is impressive enough to make the report worth ing: revenues were 185 billion yuan (.4 billion), having grown by an annual average of 29% in the past four years. The growth rate for profits has been 56%. Having just passed Nokia and Siemens, Huawei looks on track to overtake Ericsson, the industry leader, this year. But it faces some big impediments, perhaps the most important being the concerns of many governments, notably America’s and India’s, about a private company suspected of links to the security apparatus of a country said to be conducting sophisticated hacking. Because of such worries, Huawei’s efforts to buy American companies have been blocked and some sales have been lost. Infidelity faces women with greater incomeMen who earn less than their female partners are more likely to cheat on them, a study published on Monday found.Cheating may be a man's way of trying to restore his gender identity when he feels it is under threat, Christin Munsch, a sociology doctoral candidate at Cornell University, says in the study, which she authored and presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association."Making less money than a female partner may threaten men's gender identity by calling into question the traditional notion of men as bwinners," Munsch said.Indeed, the study found that infidelity dramatically increased when the man earning less than his female partner is Latino, probably because bwinner status is "one of the defining features of Hispanic masculinity."Then again, the same study found that men whose partners were more dependent on them were also more likely to cheat, making it a lose-lose situation for women. It's different for girls, though. Overall, women are half as likely to cheat as men anyway, whatever the circumstances, the study found."Women's femininity is not defined by their bwinner status, nor is it defined by sexual conquest. Therefore, economic dependency does not serve as a threat to women," Munsch says. The study indicates ways to prevent one's partner cheating without giving up the well-paid day job. Both sides being satisfied in a relationship is a sure-fire way to make infidelity disappear, and getting your partner to go to church or the mosque or temple regularly is another: the more regularly an individual attends a religious service, the less likely he or she is to cheat, the study says.Looking for a partner in a university library, lab or lecture might also be an idea because, the study says, "the more education one reports, the less likely he or she is to engage in infidelity."Vocabulary:doctoral candidate:士生call into question: 使…… 201008/111664Just as the Internet's social networks have changed the way people communicate - a case in point is how Facebook helped Egyptian protesters to organize their historic demonstrations - social media also are changing the way doctors' offices operate and the way patients communicate with their doctors. What if you could use your cell phone to go online and make your medical appointments, request prescription refills or ask your doctor a question? Or, if you could retrieve your medical records wherever you had Internet access? What if an emergency room doctor could instantly see your health records, the medications you are taking and communicate with your doctor? It could save time, and maybe even your life. This is how social media and technology are changing the way medicine is practiced. Dr. Jeff Livingston's practice, MacArthur Ob/Gyn in Irving, Texas, does all of this. "It has just revolutionized the way we do healthcare," he said. Livingston and his colleagues use social media and password-protected software to share medical information with their patients. "We provide the patient full access to their medical care. Anything I can see, the patient can see. All of their notes, all of their doctor visits are right there. All of their lab work is right there." Patients can communicate privately with their doctors on the practice's web site through a secure connection or "portal" - and they can get information or join forums on the practice's social media sites. We want to engage our patients in their healthcare," said Livingston. "So our practice has a Facebook page. It has a MySpace page. We have a Twitter feed. We have thousands of people who follow us through all this media. And what we found is that the patients really love that." Kristi Francisco said she likes being able to log on and get the results of her medical tests. "This way I could get right into the practice portal and see, yes, everything’s fine and I don’t have to worry about things and just go on with my day and get on with my life."

North Korea's leader has apparently told a senior Chinese envoy he is willing to resume talks to resolve the issue of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons. China's Xinhua news agency says North Korean leader Kim Jong Il promises to work toward making the Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons. Mr. Kim also is willing to engage in what the report describes as "bilateral or multilateral talks" to help push that goal forward. Those comments, if accurate, would be the first explicit sign in months that North Korea is willing to resume diplomacy aimed at ending its nuclear weapons programs. Mr. Kim reportedly made them to senior Chinese envoys visiting Pyongyang. A North Korean state broadcaster says Mr. Kim met with Dai Bingguo, an envoy of Chinese Premier Hu Jintao. They held talks in a "cordial atmosphere" about continuing the North Korea-China friendship. China's envoy to six-nation nuclear talks, Wu Dawei, also attended the meeting. The often-stalled six-nation talks also involve the ed States, South Korea, Japan, and Russia. Earlier this year, North Korea declared the six-party process "useless" and over with. It conducted its second nuclear test in May. South Korean officials caution against interpreting Mr. Kim's reported comments as a signal the North is y to come back to the talks. The South's foreign minister, Yu Myung-hwan, told business leaders in Seoul Friday that Pyongyang has other ideas. Yu says now that North Korea possesses nuclear weapons, Pyongyang intends to have U.S.-North Korea arms reduction talks, which the U.S. cannot accept. Washington has ruled out such arms reduction talks, which would implicitly recognize North Korea as a nuclear weapons state. The ed States and its regional partners say they will accept nothing less than a complete and verifiable end to North Korea's nuclear arms capabilities. President Obama's administration has expressed willingness to talk to North Korea one-on-one, but only in a context that is directly connected to the six-party talks. North Korea analysts here in the South Korean capital find it significant that Mr. Kim's reported comments come during a visit from China. Beijing is the North's only significant ally, and provides a lifeline of food, fuel, and resources to its hobbled economy. Hong Hyun-ik is a North Korea researcher at the Sejong Institute in Seoul. He says China felt the need to stop the North's nuclear activities from getting out of hand. He says Beijing also does not want to be isolated from any one-on-one diplomatic arrangement between North Korea and the ed States. So, China sent its envoy, says Hong, to remind Kim Jong Il how crucial it is to the North's economic fate. 09/84603Matilda Cuomo - wife, mother, teacher and former first lady of New York State - has perhaps had the most far-reaching impact as founder of Mentoring USA, which has trained volunteer mentors for more than 5,000 schoolchildren nationwide. Cuomo was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1931, during the Great Depression. Despite the bleak economic conditions, her mother, an Italian immigrant, and her father, the child of immigrants, were intent on realizing the American dream for themselves and their five children. I was very fortunate in that regard. They suffered and struggled and sacrificed so much," she says . "They put five children through college without a Pell Grant or government help. You have to honor them for that and appreciate it and be gratified. So that’s how I feel." Doing whatever is necessary to make life better has been a recurring theme in Cuomo’s life - as a teacher, a mother and a mentor. In 1954, she married a young law student named Mario Cuomo whose long public service career eventually led to the New York State governor’s mansion. Looking out for childrenAfter that election in 1982, Cuomo also entered public service as a volunteer advocate for children. The mid-1980s were a difficult time for New York State. The economy was in recession. Crack addiction was becoming epidemic in the cities. The teen pregnancy rate was soaring, and the high school graduation rate was plummeting to record lows. These trends were deeply disturbing to Governor Cuomo. Can China cushion the blow?China's surging economy may be able to cushion the blow from a slowdown in the U.S. CNN's John Vause reports.Like so many of China’s growing middle class, Pan Honglin is cashed up and y to spend, he wants to buy this fully-loaded SUV, price tag including taxes,45,000 US dollars. But he will have to wait, the salesman told me I can’t have it for more than 3 months, he says, there are orders for this car until April. Chinese consumers wealthier than ever are spending more than ever, helping to drive this economy like never before. For five years now, the economy has been growing at double-digit speed, so fast the government has struggled to slow it. So a drop in demand from the US, China’s No1 customer for exports would be seen here as not necessarily a bad thing. It would tone down Chinese trade surplus a bit, it would tone down inflationary pressures a bit and it would tone down overall growth a bit. Many exporters are feeling the pinch like this Beijing textile company, manager Yang Aiwu tells me her sales to the US are down but she adds "we’re doing better business with Europe, Russia and Australia", some economists argue China is now so robust that a drop in US exports won’t have a major impact at all. ”The thing is what we’ve seen in recent years is significantly growth not all the way, by any means been driven by exports it’s been domestic demand, It's been consumption and investment Investment in all those things China didn’t build for 50 years. Roads, airports and skyscrapers, lots of skyscrapers. in recent years an estimated 40 billion US dollars has been spent rebuilding Beijing alone. In fact, some economists now argue that China’s economy is so big and getting bigger, that while it may not be able to save the world from a US-led recession, Chances are it will soften the blow.
