The identity of Elena Ferrante, the elusive author (and subject of a series of essays in the current issue of T) who has never been photographed, interviewed in person or seen in public, is a matter of intense debate thanks to her sharp, autobiographical novels, which explore female friendship in the context of Italian society. On the eve of the publication of ;Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay,; the third volume in Ferrante#39;s Neapolitan series, we offer a short history of literary masks, from Jonathan Swift to J.K. Rowling. 新书《离开的和留下来的》(Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay)是她的那不勒斯系列小说的第三卷,在这本书出版前夕,我们来盘点一下那些隐姓埋名的作家们——从乔纳森·斯威夫特(Jonathan Swift)到J·K·罗琳(J. K. Rowling)。 Thanks to Swift#39;s cloak-and-dagger tactics, not even his publisher knew the true identity of the author of ;Gulliver#39;s Travels.; The writer sent an intermediary to hand off the manuscript under the cover of night, along with a letter supposedly from Gulliver#39;s cousin. (Benjamin Franklin)The founding father used a number of pseudonyms to publish opinionated newspaper pieces: ;Silence Dogood; to critique hypocrisy and hoopskirts; ;Polly Baker; to argue for women#39;s rights; ;Anthony Afterwit; to detail the tribulations of marriage. Franklin#39;s most famous alter ego, ;Richard Saunders,; authored the popular ;Poor Richard#39;s Almanack; for 25 years. (Sir Walter Scott)Nicknamed ;The Great Unknown,; Scott secretly published his wildly successful ;Waverley; novels and, in so doing, helped forge the genre of historical fiction. He maintained anonymity for years, keeping his work a secret even from his own children, until financial pressures forced him to confess. The Bront·sisters勃朗特姊(The Bront? sisters)Charlotte, Emily and Anne produced their masterworks of Victorian literature under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. They chose these androgynous monikers because of ;a vague impression that authoresses are liable to be looked on with prejudice,; an impression shared by at least two other great ;authoresses; of the day, George Eliot and George Sand. (Sholem Aleichem)At the start of his career, the prolific writer whose work would inspire ;Fiddler on the Roof; didn#39;t want his relatives to know he was publishing in Yiddish rather than Hebrew. The novelist, born Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, adopted the pen name ;Sholem Aleichem,; a Hebrew greeting that means ;peace be unto you,; and authored dozens of books under the pseudonym. (Louisa May Alcott)In addition to her celebrated tales of stalwart sisters and lovable orphans, Alcott wrote lesser-known novels with titles like ;The Abbot#39;s Ghost, Or Maurice Treherne#39;s Temptation; and ;Behind a Mask, Or a Woman#39;s Power.; She published these stories of love and suspense under the pseudonym A.M. Barnard — a mask of her own.除了她那些关于斯图尔特姊和可爱的孤儿们的著名故事,阿尔科特还写过一些不那么有名的小说,比如《阿特的幽灵,或毛里斯·特伦赫纳的诱惑》(The Abbot#39;s Ghost, Or Maurice Treherne#39;s Temptation)以及《面具之后,或女人的力量》(Behind a Mask, Or a Woman#39;s Power)等,她用笔名A·M·巴纳德(A. M. Barnard)发表了这些充满爱意和悬疑的小说,这也是她自己的面具。 (James Weldon Johnson)In Johnson#39;s groundbreaking ;Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man; (1912), a young man of mixed race decides to pass as white. As its author had hoped, the anonymously published novel ;passed; as memoir until Johnson acknowledged it to be fiction in 1927. ;Autobiography; went on to influence generations of African-American writers. álvaro de Campos, naval engineer. Maria José, consumptive hunchback. These are just three of the many characters invented by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. Each so-called ;heteronym; possessed unique psychologies, biographies and writing styles, and Pessoa published prolifically under their names as well as his own. (Dominique Aury)Aury wrote ;Story of O; (1954), a sadomasochistic novel replete with whips, cuffs and chains, under the pseudonym Pauline Réage. The accomplished woman of letters kept her scandalous feat a secret until 1994, when she identified herself as the mysterious author — and, just as mysteriously, mentioned that ;Dominique Aury; was not her real name, either.1954年,奥利以笔名波丽娜·雷阿日(Pauline Réage)发表了《O的故事》(Story of O),这是一部以施虐受虐为主题的小说,充满皮鞭、手铐和锁链。 J.K. RowlingJ·K·罗琳Hoping to receive ;totally unvarnished feedback,; the ;Harry Potter; author adopted the pseudonym Robert Galbraith when she published ;The Cuckoo#39;s Calling,; a book for adults, in 2013. It wasn#39;t the first time she had concocted a name: Joanne Rowling started going by initials, including a fictitious ;K,; when a publisher warned her that boys might not buy books by a woman. /201409/331469Guru An overly flattering title added to words like ;social media;。 This is Mr. Kai-Fu Lee, Weibo guru. Synergy A fancy way to say ;works well together;。 There#39;s a lot of synergy between the two companies. Loop in More email in your inbox。 I noticed you weren#39;t on the email so I#39;ll loop you in. Ping me Let me continue to bother you in a different electronic medium。 Ping me (在msn、qq、skype上)提醒我。造句:Feel free to ping me if I haven#39;t gotten back to you by Friday morning! Sync up Let#39;s rehash whatever just happened because I wasn#39;t paying attention。 Sync up 同步。造句:Let#39;s sync our efforts. /201309/257334

Seeing Yang Leiguang, you might never imagine that the skinny boy traveled independently to Tibet for one month. More surprisingly, the 21-year-old from Henan University of Science and Technology brought only 500 yuan with him and earned other funds for travel on the way. He thinks that, with this trip, he accomplished his dream because he experienced some of the most memorable moments of his life. Most desirable destination向往已久Yang acquired his love for Tibet after watching a documentary about the holy place. “I remembered watching people kowtow in front of the Potala Palace. Their devoted faces and sincere emotions just touched me so much that I wanted to go there myself,” he says. So he started to prepare for his long-awaited trip after he entered university and had more free time. Most thrilling experience兴奋不已Though Yang had been preparing for the Tibet trip for three years – doing exercise, learning hiking and wilderness survival skills, practicing photography and ing travel guides – he still met some unexpected challenges on the way. “Since it was my first time in Tibet, I underestimated the cost. I had to use every means to live cheaply and make more money,” he says. In one month’s time, he did several different jobs. He got paid to mark down the names of the people who reserved tickets to enter the Potala Palace; he handed out leaflets; and what he felt most thrilled about was selling souvenirs. “I learned from one of my fellow backpackers that he was making money from selling souvenirs, so I bought accessories from the open market and sold them in the city center just as he did,” Yang explains. But that work was not risk-free. Like all the other vendors, Yang ran away whenever someone came to tell him to stop selling souvenirs. Most difficult moment艰难时刻For most of the trip, Yang handled situations properly, but there was one moment when he felt embarrassed and devastated. “That was at Nam Co,” he says. “A girl and I wanted to go back to Lhasa, but we couldn’t get a free ride until 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon when a pickup truck came and agreed to take us”. But there was only one seat available. Yang is a gentleman, so he gave his seat to the girl, but he left all of his stuff on board. When he realized his mistake, it was aly too late. He couldn’t catch up with the vehicle, and he didn’t have a cell phone to call the police or the girl. He had to walk alone along the road. “I walked for hours on the road, and I even worried about the worst result – that I may die of thirst or freeze to death,” he says. He was lucky enough to eventually catch a bus to Lhasa, where he met the girl again and got his stuff. The trip didn’t only bring Yang good memories and friends but also beautiful photos. He used these photos to make postcards and sell them on his campus. “I earned some money from this business, which will fund my next trip,” Yang says. /201312/267711

When I think of Hawaii I immediately conjure up#39; mental visions of vibrant and profuse flora, sapphire blue waters, white sand beaches that stretch forever and sipping cooling rum punches served in coconut shells fancied up with brightly coloured paper parasols. It is all that, but the Hawaiian Islands are so much more. Many of my friends had visited this paradise before I finally had the opportunity. From Canada,we flew from Victoria on Vancouver Island to Vancouver on B.C.#39;s mainland.Just five hours we landed in Honolulu,a beautiful and modern city of about three quarters of a million residents, formed four million years ago by massive volcanoes. We enjoyed a van ride from the airport to our beachfront hotel in Waikiki. There are many things to enjoy here from the famous Waikiki Beach,to a visit to a local pineapple or banana plantation or a native village featuring Hawaiian dancing.A pig roasted in a pit in the ground is tender and delicious to eat while watching the graceful hula dance being performed. The most notable landmark is the 760-foot extinct volcanic crater, known as Diamond Head, located on the southeastern end of the island near Waikiki Beach. It is interesting to see a narrow opening in the rocks not far from there, where the sea rushes in and spouts the water high into the air. There are many places to rent snorkel gear#39; and surfboards. If you prefer a fun group activity, sign up for a fast ride. Passengers sit one behind the other on a banana-shaped inflatable while they zip across the ocean behind a high-speed boat. One can also visit Pearl Harbour and see, from a memorial platform, the warship Arizona which was sunk by the Japanese on that historic day December 7,1941. The best and simplest way to really see Oahu Island is to rent a car and travel its perimeter. We stopped at roadside stands selling fruit, others piled high with conch shells which we tried to blow and an interesting outdoor gallery with a wide variety of Hawaiian themes painted on half surfboards.Located on the north shore of the island and a Mecca for surfers is the Banzai Pipeline, world renowned for its gigantic seven-metre waves. It requires much skill and daring to ride them to the safe shallow waters without being dashed upon underlying coral reefs. After three days of learning our way around:we boarded a cruise ship which would travel north during the night to the Island of Kauai where we would eat breakfast on the aft deck before heading in to the shops in the tiny town of Nawiliwili.Mount Waialeale which stands 1,675 metres above sea level is the rainiest spot on earth with its annual rainfall an amazing 1,150 centimetres! Kauai with a population of 60,000 is therefore lush with vegetation and beautiful waterfalls and is known as the ;Garden Island;.It was here that movies such as Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and Jurassic Park (1993) and more recently the television series Lost were filmed. Sailing back south past Oahu, the ship anchored at the Island of Maui or Valley Island which got its name from a huge valley formed when two large volcanoes erupted. Its red volcanic dirt is excellent for growing sugar cane. In by-gone days, the community of Lahaina was a whaling town.Fifty percent of the world#39;s humpback whale population travel through Maui#39;s warm waters and thankfully Lahaina#39;s main industry has changed from whaling to tourism.Waters being too shallow to dock at the pier, passengers came ashore on the 128-person enclosed life boats. A number of historic buildings are across from the town#39;s park, in the centre of which is one of the largest and oldest banyan; trees I have ever seen, its many roots hanging down to form numerous new trunks making a living canopy over the entire park. It was delightful to sit on a bench in the park with balmy breezes blowing and listen to a school group sing a variety of Hawaiian songs. May is a great time to travel to these islands as it is just past their rid temperatures are comfortable.A canoe-building contest and festival was on at that time and it was very interesting to see different types of dugouts in various stages of construction.I had never heard of the A chain of shops until we arrived in Waikiki and they seemed to be located on every street corner in every Hawaiian town and Lahaina was no exception. They carry a variety of touristy items from Kona Coffee to macadamia nuts, jewellery, T-shirts, sandals, and snacks. If you are looking for small gifts, this is a good place to find them. As we were to be in port for two days, we reserved two spots on a beautiful sailboat called Scotch Mist for the next day to sail out and snorkel with sea turtles. We then took a local bus to a nearby beach and, after looking in more upscale shops, lazed around enjoying the sun and the sand. The following day was sunny, as Scotch Mist motored along the shoreline for a good hour to reach the sea turtle area.Armed with a disposable underwater camera I attempted a few photos as I tried to swim close to the turtles. They are beautiful to watch as their large flippers move them gracefully through the blue waters. Later I that sea turtle areas are a favourite spot for sharks.Had I known that, I might not have been as enthusiastic about keeping company with the turtles. After a relaxing two hours the wind came up and so we had a most enjoyable time actually sailing back to port. Continuing south,we stopped at Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here we had pre-booked a Safari Helicopter ride to see rivers of lava flowing from the Kilauea Crater. This is a trip you#39;ll not want to miss. Do be prepared, when reserving, to give your weight as the pilots need this to place passengers in the right spots in the helicopter to keep things balanced. After being on a cruise ship for a week and being tempted by so much delicious food, we were not anxious to reveal our true weights but did anyway. After all were seated and had earphones in place, we lifted off with the ease of an eagle. As the volcano itself was not very active at this time, we flew over the rivers of red hot lava which showed up well in open areas. We also swung over a number of blowholes or vents where we could see the red lava showing through below the rising steam.Flying along the coast, we were fascinated by observing the clouds of steam as the hot lava hit the cooler ocean. Our flight finished up cruising over a large waterfall before setting down back at the airport. Hilo is also known for its Hawaiian store called Hattie and there are several branches throughout the Islands as well as in California,Nevada and Florida. They have retail and online sales of Hawaiian fashions, foods, gifts, jewellery, music and books. On entering their shops, everyone is given a shell necklace. Their wide selection of shirts is world-renowned and it is worth one#39;s while to browse at other items such as chinaware, sandals, nuts and coffee. Hawaii is much more than sandy beaches, and travellers from all parts of the world enjoy a stay in these beautiful islands. /201409/332821

(CNN) -- If you are a woman, you#39;ve likely experienced the creepy, disrespectful and sometimes scary way some men treat you as you walk down the street -- lewd looks, unwanted comments, compliments about your body, elongated necks craning to see your backside, catcalls, even being followed.(CNN) --作为女人,在走在大街上时,你很可能经历过男人的这些恶心的、无礼的,有时甚至是可怕的对待,比如说色眯眯的注视,评头论足,恭维你的身材或容貌,伸长脖子看你的背面,吹口哨,甚至是跟踪你。It can be very hard to explain why catcalls and unwanted comments amount to harassment. Thankfully, there#39;s a new online that drives it home. In it, a woman walks around Manhattan for 10 hours(a hidden camera is in front of her and she#39;s got microphones in each hand.) She#39;s harassed 108 times as she walks (silently) down the streets of the city. In two instances she#39;s followed; one of the guys walks beside her for over five minutes. It#39;s very eerie. It#39;s a very sobering and enlightening experience to watch the barrage of harassment happen. And sadly, since so many of you believe that women provoke violence and even rape based on how they dress -- get this, the woman in the is wearing a plain T-shirt and jeans. There#39;s no cleavage or midriff or bare leg showing -- she#39;s just a gal walking down the street. The is compelling, particularly for women. It is uncomfortable to be harassed like this walking down the street, and yes, harassment is exactly what it is. In fact, in many states, it#39;s also illegal. For a long time, I didn#39;t see it that way. Maybe it#39;s because I make a living giving keynotes on leadership and at 45 have grown to be a very confident, extroverted person. Every time a man would say ;Hey Beautiful; to me, I#39;d just look him straight in the eyes, shoot a smile and shout back ;Yo what#39;s up; -- which works like a charm, de-sexualizes the whole thing, keeps it Midwestern friendly while leaving the guy speechless that I asserted myself. But my opinion about catcalls changed when I saw it happen to my daughter. She#39;s a beautiful girl, and just 15. A few weeks ago, we were walking in Boston -- she was in jeans, LL Bean boots and a flannel shirt -- yet the majority of guys eyed her head to toe and about half of them turned back to check out her butt. With every look, the momma bear in me started to get really angry. Sawyer, on the other hand, just got very quiet. When we crossed the street in front of a work site, she just stared at the ground. My viewpoint changed that day. She didn#39;t want the attention; she just wanted to walk down the sidewalk and window shop. And, more importantly, she didn#39;t know how to handle it. That#39;s the crux of it. When you catcall, the attention, the comments, the looks are unwanted and they can make a woman feel emotionally and physically uncomfortable. A woman (or a girl) walking down the street just wants to be left alone. She#39;s not interested in what you think about her body or her face. If she was, she#39;d ask you. It#39;s hard for guys to understand this, particularly when the sex center of the male brain is 2.5 times larger than the female sex center in the brain. Guys will likely always have sex on the brain more than women do. And sexual desire and power is absolutely at the root of catcalls -- that#39;s why you hoot, holler, leer, jeer at a woman -- and it#39;s also why guys think there#39;s nothing wrong with it. Whether a woman or a girl can handle the attention isn#39;t relevant; guys shouldn#39;t be putting women and girls in a position in which they feel like they are getting eyed like a piece of meat. How should men approach women? There#39;s a huge difference between harassing a woman on the street with catcalls and actually trying to have a conversation with her. In case you fellas do want to speak with a woman, her are a few rules:在大街上吹口哨骚扰一个姑娘与真正想与姑娘交谈有着巨大的差别,你们这些家伙如果真想和一个姑娘交谈,要遵循这些规则:1. Speak ;to; her, not ;at; her.“与”她说话,而不是“对着”她说话。Whistles, shouts, hoots, hollers, kissing and animal sounds may help you hail a cab, but if you do it to a woman you don#39;t know, it#39;s harassment. 2. Start a conversation ;with; her, not ;about; her.“和”她交谈,而不是对她“评头论足”。Talk about the weather, the day, the book she#39;s ing, because then it is a conversation. Do not talk about her hair, her smile, her outfit, her legs, her booty or her appearance, because that#39;s harassment. 3. If she walks away do not follow her. If she ignores you, drops eye contact or keeps walking -- just leave her alone. If you start following her, you aren#39;t complimenting her, you are stalking her. At the end of the day, if you want to connect with a woman, all you need to do is smile. There#39;s no need to say anything. That#39;s all it takes. Look her in the eyes and smile. She#39;ll likely smile back. That#39;s it. If she wants to say hello, I#39;m sure she will. If she doesn#39;t, just let her be. And speaking of eye contact, look at her eyes, because when you stare at her chest, her butt, her private area or do the top-to-bottom scan, it makes her feel extremely uncomfortable. Women walking on a sidewalk are not walking on a catwalk, and you#39;re not a judge on America#39;s Top Model, so stop acting like one. /201411/340353
