U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, speaking after telephone consultations with big-power foreign ministers, said there has been progress in European mediation efforts on the Russia-Georgia conflict. Rice said Moscow must abide by its stated promise to halt military operations. Rice is welcoming the apparent progress in the French-led mediation effort with Russia and Georgia but says further steps to defuse the crisis depend on the warring parties making good on their stated intention to cease hostilities. Rice, speaking at the White House after meeting President Bush, said she and fellow foreign ministers of the G7 Industrial powers had been given a telephone briefing from French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner on the mission to Moscow by French President Nikolas Sarkozy. They believe that they made have made some progress and we welcome that, we welcome the EU mediation," she said. "It is very important now that all parties cease-fire. The Georgians have agreed to the cease-fire. The Russians need to stop their military operations, as they apparently have said that they will. But those military operations really do now need to stop." Rice said a cease-fire would be followed by the withdrawal of forces from the zone of conflict, and efforts to resolve the long-running conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, but not, she made clear, by redrawing the current borders of Georgia. I want to make very clear that the ed States stands for the territorial integrity of Georgia, for the sovereignty of Georgia, that we support its democratically-elected government and its people," said Rice. "We are reviewing our options for humanitarian and reconstruction assistance for Georgia." The two Georgian regions, both of which border Russia and have large ethnic-Russian populations, have resisted central Georgian authority since the former Soviet republic became independent in 1991. Russia says it intervened last week after Georgian forces tried to capture South Ossetia. But State Department Deputy Spokesman Robert Wood reiterated Tuesday that Russian retaliation, including wide-ranging air strikes, went far beyond any notion of trying to protect Russians living in South Ossetia. It was pure aggression on the part of Russia," he said. "They overreacted. This is not an issue of trying to just protect your citizens. Attacking civilians, attacking a member of the ed Nations the way they did, that was just uncalled for." President Bush Tuesday continued international phone contacts in support of the peace effort, calling German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after a late-night discussion Monday with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Mr. Bush, in a somber White House statement before that call, termed Moscow's military drive and seeming effort to depose Georgia's elected government "unacceptable" behavior in the 21st century. 2 Often, the only clue he has, is from some ancient text. And it is up to him to puzzle out the arcane references and make them fit the modern landscape. Armed only with a walking stick to fend off snakes and rabid dogs, he has walked many thousands of miles, but he has had many successes. After struggling up this forested mountainside, he discovered a long-lost wall. No one had ever noticed it before but once it was part of an ancient Great Wall, too much earlier, and in a completely different location from the wall everyone knows. And the more scientists and archeologists probe, the more mysterious it all becomes. In a lifetime of searching, Chen has discovered thousands of miles of forgotten walls. In fact, if you add up all the walls that we now know about, it comes to a staggering total of 35, 000 miles, almost enough to stretch around the planet twice. But why built so many walls at such an enormous cost? What were the Chinese afraid of? It was said you could smell them coming, even before you heard the thunder of their hooves. Then they were on you, slaughtering, raping, pillaging and burning. Behind them, they left a trail of smoking cities and bleached bones. They were the nomadic hordes of the northern plains, the Huns, Mongols, Manchus, all at war with the settled life of the Chinese. The Chinese were terrified by the nomads and detested their harsh way of life. A famous poem said they have no fields or pastures, only wastes where white bones lie among yellow sands. Nomads live solely off their livestock. Their animals provided every basic need: food, milk, meat, hides for clothes and the yurt - the nomadic tent. Animal dung provided fuel. In this uncompromising landscape, it was the only way to fuel a fire. The harsh climate kept the nomads always on the move, looking for pastures suitable for their flocks. When disease and freezing weather decimated their animals, the nomadic hordes raided the Chinese when they refused to trade with them. China had everything the nomads didn't have, rice, silk, writing and a very elaborate civilization. The Great Wall was a barrier between the civilized world of the Chinese and barbarians.arcane: secret, hidden; mysterious; occultforested: covered with trees, thickly woodedyurt: rounded building characteristic of the Mongols and the Turks of central Asiadung: animal excrement200707/15842Bush to Inspect Damage in Flooded Iowa布什周四将视察美中部洪水灾区 U.S. President George Bush will visit the Midwest state of Iowa Thursday to inspect damage from major flooding along the Mississippi River. Mr. Bush says he will work with Congress to replenish funds used to help those affected by natural disaster. Federal officials briefed the president on efforts to shore-up levees along the Mississippi River and help those displaced by the flooding. Crews along the river have been working feverishly stacking sandbags to keep the water from spilling out into low lying areas. Speaking to reporters after that briefing, Mr. Bush said there has been close coordination between federal and state authorities. We're in constant contact with people on the ground to help make sure that we save lives," he said. "Now that the water is beginning to recede, the question is how do we help with the recovery?" The U.S. Department of Agriculture is still assessing the economic impact of the flooding. President Bush says he understands many people are upset about loosing their homes and businesses. We are worried about farmers and ranchers. The country that is being affected by these floods has got a lot of farm country, a lot people raising livestock," he said. Officials are reinforcing levees in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri to prevent further damage from river water that has aly closed bridges and destroyed homes. President Bush said there is enough money in a federal emergency fund to pay for the clean-up and help those affected by the flooding. He will work with lawmakers to ensure those funds are replaced ahead of another natural disaster. Congress doesn't need to worry about working with the White House on this because we think the supplemental is the way to go," he said. "What they do need to worry about is making sure there is enough but not too much money in the fund so that we can say we've done our job." The president will visit Iowa Thursday to meet with some of those affected by the flooding. 200806/42234Palestinian, Israeli Leaders Call for Larger EU Role in Peace Process以巴吁欧对中东和平发挥更大作用 Palestinian and Israeli leaders have declared their commitment to peace before a Mediterranean summit in Paris. But the gathering mirrored the objectives of the new Mediterranean partnership - in which members could learn to like each other rather than to make war. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas scheduled discussions before the afternoon summit, in which more than 40 heads of state launched a new pact between the European Union and non-European Mediterranean states. Although there have been few developments in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations in recent months, both leaders said they were committed to peace. Olmert described the talks as very serious. Africa is dominated by deserts, from the Kalahari in the south to the mighty Sahara in the north. These are fascinating worlds, each one unique, all a challenge. Yet life can conquer them and in the most surprising ways. This is an epic journey across Africa's magnificent deserts, a story of survival against the odds. Africa. Seen from space, great swathes of sand and rock cover more than half the continent. In the far south, bordering the Atlantic is the world's most ancient desert, the Namib. For eighty million years, cold, dry winds have swept in from the ocean, denying the land moisture and piling enormous sand dunes against the shore. Beautiful but impossibly dry, in a good year, the Namib gets just five centimeters of rain; in a bad year, it rains only sand. But buried within the dunes, there is treasure. Fragments of dead animals and plants swallowed long ago by the sand are swept to the surface, offering a crucial lifeline. Beetles, many different species have found ways to harvest this bounty. Along with termites and lizards, they're the foundations for a delicate chain of life in the Namib. against the odds:very unexpectedly 非常出人意料的dune:a hill made of sand near the sea or in the desert 沙丘swathe:a long thin area of something, especially land 大区域 地带bounty:literary food or wealth that is provided in large amounts 丰富食物Kalahari:喀拉哈里沙漠,覆盖赞比亚 茨瓦尔 南非Namib:纳米布沙漠 以月牙形的沙丘为特征200807/44540

Hopes Dwindle in Finding More China Quake Survivors四川震灾发现生还者希望日益缩小 More than six days after a powerful earthquake struck southwestern China, hopes are dwindling that more trapped people will be found alive. The official death toll so far is more than 32,000, but is expected to surpass 50,000. China has begun three days of national mourning. Chinese leaders have repeatedly said saving human lives is their number one priority. More than 60 earthquake survivors were rescued in the disaster zone Saturday, but by Sunday, the numbers had fallen. Chinese media reported at least one successful rescue Sunday morning - a man recovered from a collapsed hospital in Beichuan. Reporter Daniel Schearf said after the earthquake, Beichuan looks like a war zone. My first image, when I turned the corner into the town, was just a pile of twisted rubble and concrete. It was a hill, it was a mountain, of what used to be buildings, and it just seemed to stretch on forever," he said. "I don't know how to describe it. It just seemed very surreal." One rescue worker in Beichuan, Luo Tanfei, says his team, which includes sniffer dogs, has saved 10 people in different locations since the huge earthquake struck the region Monday. But he says he does not have too much hope of finding more survivors in that part of the city because they have not found any more traces of life. Chinese disaster relief efforts include nearly 150,000 soldiers, who have been actively supporting emergency work. People's Liberation Army leaders spoke to reporters in Beijing Sunday, and emphasized that soldiers are facing hardships and working together with ordinary Chinese people. Air Force Major General Ma Jian also made reassurances that all of China's nuclear facilities in the area are safe. Shortly after the earthquake hit, we have sent teams of the armed police and PLA men to ensure that these facilities are under very strict protection measures and there is no problem involved here," general Ma said. The Chinese government has allocated nearly 0 million (four billion RMB) for earthquake relief.
