Meals at the family dinner table could be the key to preventing a generation of teenage girls from developing eating disorders.New research shows girls who regularly have family meals are much less likely to adopt extreme weight control behaviors such as vomiting, using laxatives or diet pills.A study surveying more than 2500 American high school students found that girls who ate five or more family meals a week had a much healthier relationships with food in later life. The research, published in international journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, polled students aged 13 to 17 in 1999 who were followed up five years later. Regular family meals were found to have a protective effect regardless of the girls' age, weight, socio-economic status, dieting habits or relationship with her family.Experts say doctors should encourage families to have dinner at the table instead of on the couch in front of the television to protect against serious eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.Belinda Dalton, director of eating disorders clinic The Oak House, said eating with family helped "normalise" young people's relationship with food."When adolescents are feeling that they're not coping they turn to something that they can control and food is something available and accessible for them to control. Clearly, if they're sitting with their family on a regular basis then their family can be more in control of their eating," Ms Dalton said."It's about young people feeling connected with their family and that builds self-esteem and sense of worth and that works very actively against someone developing an eating disorder."An eating disorders expert, Kirsty Greenwood, said meal times were often difficult for sufferers. "It's typical that they feel very ashamed of their eating habits and often won't eat with other people. Perhaps it's because they haven't experienced the importance of the family meal in their growing up," she said.

A decade after singling out the Spice Girls as fashion atrocities, Mr. Blackwell put just one of them -- Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham -- at the top of his 48th annual worst-dressed list released Tuesday. The acid-tongued critic who was designing dresses for the rich and famous when he originated the list in 1960, skewered entertainment's biggest stars in the latest compilation of fashion follies, including Fergie, Kelly Clarkson, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson.Blackwell heaped venom on Beckham, his No. 1 choice on the list."Forget the fashion spice, wearing a skirt would suffice! In one skinny-mini monstrosity after another, pouty posh can really wreck-em," he said in a statement.Blackwell listed the Spice Girls as No. 1 in his 1998 worst-dressed list, deriding the group as "the only spices on the planet that have no taste."The top 10 roll-call of fashion dishonors also included:No. 2. Amy Winehouse -- "Exploding beehives above, tacky polka-dots below, she's part 50's carhop horror."No. 3. Mary Kate Olsen -- "She resembles a tattered toothpick-trapped in a hurricane."No. 4. Fergie -- "Yes, when it comes to couture chaos, guess it's all in a name!"The rest of the top 10 list included Kelly Clarkson, Eva Green, Avril Lavigne, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan and Alison Arngrim.Missing from the list was Britney Spears, who has made it many times before."I felt that it was inappropriate at this time to make comment, when her personal life is in such upheaval. I hope 2008 is a better year for her," Blackwell said.Blackwell also released a Fabulous Fashion Independents list that included Reese Witherspoon, Jemima Khan, Beyonce, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes, Kate Middleton, Katherine Heigl and Cate Blanchett.

A flexible work life such as telecommuting, is good for your health, researchers said. They found that if people have the ability to work from home and to compress work weeks, they are more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices, to exercise more and to sleep better."Perhaps it gives people the time to fit in healthier lifestyle into their everyday regimen or maybe it just enables people to better manage their time," Professor Joseph G. Grzywacz, of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, said in an interview. While the primary driver behind the flexibility movement was to help people, especially women, combine work and family, evidence suggests this is clearly not only a women's issue, Grzywacz, who reported the findings in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, said. The researchers looked at Health Risk Appraisals from employees in jobs ranging from warehouse and production workers to executives at a large multinational pharmaceutical company. The firm used for the study is consistently recognized by Working Mother magazine as among the most family-friendly employers in the ed States."This isn't just about high-level office workers, these people perform a wide variety of tasks within the company," Grzywacz explained. He said the research shows public health departments and organizations that they could get something out of giving their employees more flexibility. But, he added, further research was needed to assess the long-term benefits. /200803/30966。

B News –Beijing#39;s Intellectual Property Office has ruled against Apple in a patent dispute brought by a Chinese handset maker.B新闻 – 北京的知识产权局在一起由中国手机制造商引发的专利纠纷案中,做出对苹果公司不利的裁决。The iPhone 6 and 6S models are similar to Shenzhen Baili#39;s little-known 100C phone, the authority ruled. In theory, this could lead to iPhone sales being halted in Beijing but sales continue as Apple has appealed to a higher court. They may have promised to have and to hold for richer and for poorer. But wives are most interested in the richer part.In a British study of married men and women, the majority of wives - 59 per cent - said they would divorce immediately if their future economic security was assured. The survey also found more than half of husbands thought their marriage was "loveless".And among both sexes, more than one in ten wished they had wed someone else.Responding to the astonishing results, relationship experts warned couples to avoid getting stuckin a rut- or risk the trauma of divorce. The survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 12 per cent would stay in an unhappy relationship just for an easy life.Almost 30 per cent said they were staying in a doomed marriage to save themselves going through a massive upheaval.Thirty-seven per cent said they were staying for the sake of the children.Almost a third of those polled were concerned they would be left with absolutely nothing if they walked out on their marriage. And 30 per cent of men said they were scared that they would have to leave without their children. The survey was commissioned by solicitors Seddons after a rush of divorce applications in the first week of the new year.Overall, 12 per cent said they were in a loveless relationship and more than a third (35 per cent) believed their marriage would turn stale in the near future.A shocking 56 per cent admitted they were not completely happy in their relationship - and more than half said they had considered splitting from their partner.A spokesman for the marriage counselling service-Relate said: "It's so easy for married couples to get stuck in a rut once the realities of paying the bills and getting the children's breakfast sets in."Relationships inevitably change over time. Divorce impacts on every single area of a person's life. Dividing up the family home, pets and everything they own is just part of the process." /200803/32061。

What tools do you use at work that you didn’t a decade ago? That’s the question I posed to a group of friends recently, hoping for a host of interesting examples of how technology is transforming the workplace. But the responses from a disparate group that included insurance brokers, speech therapists and entrepreneurs surprised me. All the new digital products they rated were, in effect, secretary substitutes. I heard paeans to the utility of Skyscanner for corporate travel, the benefits of Google Docs for holiday rotas and the value of EchoSign for electronic signature of documents. Regardless of industry or seniority, document encryption services and tools designed to prevent endless email trails also cropped up with regularity. This is self-service in action and a vivid example of why administrative jobs frequently top the list as those most at risk from automation. Back in 2001, there were nearly 400,000 secretarial and personal assistant roles in the UK. Now there are fewer than 200,000. The disappearance of that person who used to be the linchpin of office life has been driven by a combination of cost-cutting in the wake of the financial crisis — there was a 12 per cent drop in such roles between 2009 and 2010 alone — and the internet revolution. Administrators’ salaries proved a tempting target for businesses desperate to trim budgets, with the bonus that cuts could be billed as modernisation and as embracing new ways of working. But has the efficiency drive gone too far? The days when companies needed someone to type letters and file correspondence physically are long gone, but the digital era has brought its own version of the administrative grind. The work has not gone away, it has just been dispersed across the workforce. While phasing out jobs that just “turn the handle” is all part of the move to a higher skilled workforce, there are consequences. A recent survey from Qualtrics found UK workers estimate that less than 65 per cent of the time they spend at work is productive. The hours wasted spent trying to get a computerised approval system to understand an edge case are staples of many a pub rant. Vickie Sokol Evans, who trains Bill Gates’ executive assistants, and those in other organisations, in Microsoft technology, says there is great pressure in all organisations to “do more with less”. But she argues that efficiency comes from using technology well, not just dropping it in front of the workforce and expecting them to get on with it. Is it really more efficient for 20 sales people to all do their own expenses and travel, or can one person who really understands both the software and the rules help remove some of the grit from the wheels of corporate life? That would also mean the sales team could be out there doing what they were hired to do: selling. Top executives, of course, have managed to hang on to their secretaries — nowadays more often than not termed executive assistants. But these roles are far broader than they used to be. Monitoring budgets, preparing reports, designing slidedecks and similar tasks are increasingly part of the required skillset. A recent survey by Hays for Executive Secretary — whose conference Ms Sokol Evans will address in London next week — reported that nearly 90 per cent of senior staff said they could not to do their jobs without their PA. Peggy Grande, who was executive assistant to US President Ronald Reagan for 10 years, says no amount of technology or progress towards virtual assistants can make up for the human factor. “It is about not just what needs to be accomplished now, but staying three steps ahead,” she adds. Ms Sokol Evans says she knows of at least one multinational that is reviewing its career options for PAs and is looking to create a twin track structure: one path for those who want to push for more responsibility and widen the definition of their role and another for those who get job satisfaction from ensuring systems actually work. The pace of the digital revolution shows no signs of slackening and few office jobs will be the same in a decade. But that means the need to help humans and systems gel is more pressing. Sometimes a calm, helping hand can deliver greater efficiency gains than a software upgrade. /201604/437358。
